Which child doesn’t dream of their own little empire? This project is a step in that direction: Banknotes, coins, and stamps carrying the picture of your child. I have created a a set of five phantasy banknotes (5, 10, 20, 50, and 100), seven coins (2, 1, 0.50, 0.25, 0.10, 0.05, 0.01), and three stamps (0.05, 0.10, and 0.20).
The banknotes have several interesting features that help children understand how money works: They contain their denomination not just as a number, but also as a word, as a number of hands held up (for example, the twenty note shows four hands), and – for the notes up to 20 – as sets of items: 5 has five dice with the number 1-5 on them, as well as five sea creatures.
10 has ten animals, ten humans, and ten flowers.
20 has twenty hearts and twenty sweets.
50 has 10 tally marks with five strokes each, and five transport vehicles.
Each banknote has a different color theme, with the 100 banknote featuring rainbow colors (kids love the over-the-top look).
Here are the coins, each with the child’s silhouette on the back:
